Faster and Longer

Wednesday 17th January 2007

My weight: 12 stones 3 pounds, 171 pounds, 77.56 kilograms. - No change.

Running conditions: OK. Time of run: 21:30

20 sit-ups and 10 press-ups completed before starting the run.

Ran the current 3.1 route today with Steve setting the pace. At the beginning I felt we were going to fast so I tried to slow down and keep an even pace. On this 3.1 mile route with have 2 sharp hills, a number of steady inclines and a few down hills to run. This makes for hard work on the legs. Trying to push whilst running up hill and trying to slow down on the down hills. Having not run a half marathon for about six years and having started play football for only the past 2 years I have come to realised that my legs are not as strong as they were and I would have to work specifically on strengthening them. Steve on the other hand seemed able to deal with the ups and downs of this route much better than me. Every time after the first hill I would have to slow down whilst Steve would just be able to continue at the same pace and even increase the pace.

Today the pace we were running at felt faster than we had done before, but even. At the end of the run it came as no surprise to me, to look at my stop-watch to find out I had completed the route in 27 minutes 27.16 seconds with Steve a few seconds ahead of me. This was the quickest we had completed the 3.1 mile route. Another 26 seconds quicker than previously. Fantastic, the next question is, can I now run under 27 minutes for this route?, this would be my next goal.

Friday 19th January 2007

My weight: 12 stones 2 pounds, 170 pounds, 77.11 kilograms. - lost 1lbs.

Running conditions: good but a bit on the cold side. Time of run: 21:30

30 sit-ups and 20 press-ups completed before starting the run.

Spent the day deciding which half marathons to run in February and March in preparations for the London Marathon in April. Decided that the best options would be the Sussex Beacon Half Marathon – Brighton on Sunday 18th February 2007 and the Asics Reading Half marathon on Sunday 25th March 2007. I was please to find out that I had lost another pound (0.45359 Kg) in weight, great news but I have to say that I am surprised how long it is taking me to lose the 4lbs I put on over Christmas and New Year. New measures are required. I'll have to cut down on puddings afters meals, maybe I'll have just one a week.

Today Steve and I decided that regular long runs for us was now needed, in fact we decided too run two 3.1 mile routes plus a longer, possibly 6 to 7 mile route a week. Steve mapped out a slightly different route to the 5.5 mile route we had completed in 55 minutes a week ago and off we went. We estimated a 60 minute run at a moderate to slow pace.

We completed what turned out to be a 6.1 mile route in 1 hour, 1 minute and 24 seconds. Not bad! But next time we may have to increase the pace a bit.

A Game of two Halves”

My weight: 12 stones 2 pounds, 170 pounds, 77.11 kilograms. - no change I think from the night before. As I have decided to included my Saturday football as part of my regular training plan as I did 21 years ago when I first started running I'm going to write about it.

This Saturday Southern Armature League club, Old Lyonians thirds (3rd) were away to Old Latymerians 3rd , a team they had lost to at the home fixture 1 - 3. I had been given a chance to play the whole game for Old Lyonians, which I knew would help my running training. The pitch was in good condition considering how the weather had been the past weeks. Running on the pitch was comfortable but changing direction quickly was a bit tricky. This game of football turned out to be a game of “2 halves”. Old Lyonians clearing winning the first half and by the time the opponents gave us oranges, something I had not seen for a long time at Saturday football, at half time the score was 0 – 2. The second half belonged to Old Latymerians. They scored twice to make the final score Old Latymerians 2 Old Lyonians 2. Another point gained as we try to get off the bottom of the table.

Monday 22nd January 2007

My weight: 12 stones 1 pounds, 169 pounds, 76.65 kilograms. - lost 1lbs.

Running conditions: OK, but cold. Time of run: 21:00

30 sit-ups and 20 press-ups completed before starting the run.

Today its the 3.1 mile route and we are aiming to do it in under 28 minutes again if possible. Steve wanted to run at a faster pace so I agreed, hoping that I would be able to keep up with him. I knew the hardest part for me would be the Ferrymead Garden's hill. We started off and Steve was a stride or two head of me until we finish the Ferrymead Garden's hill climb and started the descent, after that he was an increasing distance ahead all the away to the end, the lamp post. At the end my time for the 3.1 route was amazingly under 27 minutes at 26:48:60, 39 seconds faster again. Steve had finished some 40 seconds ahead of me and was waiting for me to past the lamp post to record the time.

Afterwards I went round to Steve's and we both applied on line for, the Sussex Beacon half marathon in Brighton and the Asics Reading half marathon. When I got home I had the confirmation emails that confirmed my place in both half marathons. I also brought a Asics Reading half marathon T-shirt. I just have to wait now for all the information and race numbers to be sent through to me.
